Activities
For those people who want to get out and explore the island or just don’t feel like sitting on the beach the whole time, there are numerous activities available.
Snorkeling
You can rent a mask/fins/snorkel package on the island, but if you have your own equipment, you might want to bring it. Then you can explore the areas around the condos without having to go into town.
Although we haven’t been there yet, we do plan on visiting Chankanaab park, which is just a few minutes north of the condos. They claim to have the best snorkeling on the island and also have dolphin and sea lion shows. For about $120 you can swim with the dolphins for ~45 mins. Some recent reviews mention that the main lagoon is closed as of March 2007, so we might have to check on that when we arrive.
We are also considering renting a catamaran for 2-3 hours, or joining a public tour, that can take us to the best snorkeling spots. They provide all the gear and drinks. We’d probably do this on Friday or Sunday. If you’re interested, let us know!
Golf
There is a golf course on the island, although we’ve never played it. Rates are ~$100/person/round. Check out the Cozumel Country Club website, or drop an email to the general manager, Benny Campos.
Deep Sea Fishing
May is the last month the high season for fishing in Cozumel, so it should be good. We’re working with At Home in Cozumel to figure out the best charter to use. We probably would be up for fishing on Thursday or Monday, but our guests are free to go anytime (obviously).
Mayan Ruins
There are several sites on the island itself that can be explored in just a few hours, such as San Gervasio and El Cedral
For the larger and more impressive sites you can take a ferry to the mainland and visit Tulum or Chichén Itzá. Keep in mind these are 2 or 3 hours from Playa del Carmen, so it will probably be day trip! Some tours allow you to fly from Cozumel directly to the ruins, and get you back mid-afternoon.
Sunday Market & Nightlife
Every Sunday night there is a live salsa band performing in the main town plaza. This is usually packed with locals dancing, talking, flirting, etc. It’s a lot of fun to watch, and more fun to join in!
